Class Project
Introduction to Botany
Honors Option
At AVC, the Introduction to Botany course offers an Honors Option through the Honors Program, inviting students to explore the richness and ecological importance of California's native flora. This opportunity allows students to appreciate better our state's remarkable plant diversity and its vital role in supporting native pollinators and ecosystem health. As part of this option, students engage in literature-based research and may visit local natural areas, native botanical gardens, and nurseries to gain insights into sustainable landscaping practices. Each student becomes an advocate for California's native plants, helping to raise awareness and promote environmental protection. The newsletter below invites you to appreciate a few CA native species and a sample of the work produced by the students.

The BUZZ: Engaging Community College Students in Native Bee Biodiversity Research
2023 - 2028
Project funded by the National Science Foundation
As a Co-PI, I oversee the development and refining of our bilingual instructional e-material in English and Spanish. These resources are part of the comprehensive toolkit we provide to faculty participants during our annual, intensive three-day training sessions. These sessions include expert-led modules on native bee taxonomy, habitat enrichment, and the implementation of Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) focused on bee diversity.
Our project empowers passionate community college faculty across our expanding network to integrate meaningful, research-driven experiences into undergraduate education. In addition to these core responsibilities, the PIs are involved in student mentoring, community outreach initiatives, and partnering with conservation-focused organizations—efforts that significantly broaden the reach and impact of our work.
